I had a worm bin in the garden for many years. It was a plastic Dalek compost bin that I kept in a cool, shady part of the garden. I added food waste to it on a regular basis and had a thriving community of worms. It was reasonably successful and produced wonderful compost which I sieved and often used for potted plants. Unfortunately, last winter the rats tunnelled into it and took it over. I think it was because I had a month or two where I didn’t add any food waste after being knocked off my bicycle.

So I started thinking about an alternative worm bin and found it in two local skips – a bath and a door!
